Creative Writing Contests at the Islamic Writers Alliance

Submissions are being accepted in the categories of both fiction and poetry, and all writing must be Islamic in theme and nature.

Demanding clients and needy freelancers: The perfect recipe for exploitation.

There’s a reason most people reading this blog are freelancers instead of employees. It has to do with the word “free,” as in the freedom to choose our own projects, working conditions, and schedules. If you’re a freelancer, you have the right to reject any project for any reason, even if it has been offered to you by a longtime client. No one can ever tell you that you “must” accept a particular job.

Some clients have difficulty grasping this concept, however. They want to dominate your time with incessant and unreasonable demands. They think you should be available 24/7 and freak out if you do not answer an e-mail within five minutes. You will inevitably rue the day you ever gave them your phone number or allowed them to contact you via Skype.

Even knowing that such clients exist, my jaw almost dropped upon seeing the following ad for an Arabic to English translator that appeared on a popular portal for translators (note the portions in bold):

When an ad for writers reads like a singles ad, that’s NOT a good thing!

Talented writers come in many flavors.

One of the things I do on this blog is analyze job ads in order to identify “bad jobs” for freelance writers and translators. Sometimes it is quite obvious that a job is a bad deal (slave wages plus ridiculous and self-serving requirements are usually the biggest clues), so I also want to focus on some of the more subtle things one should watch out for. Many times, there is nothing technically “wrong” with an ad, but it rubs you the wrong way. Don’t ignore your intuition!

Something I have come across quite a bit are ads for writers that sound okay on the surface but are actually a little on the weird side when you think about things more deeply. An example of this is a recent ad for writers and editors that started out as follows:
